It’s 3 days before Christmas and we woke up to snow. We woke up to snow falling and the prediction of another 4 days of snow before it moves on out. Maybe that’s why the governor proclaimed Flagstaff, Arizona’s Winter Wonderland! And Peak Events was lucky enough to be called by the CVB to put together a Winter Wonderland Activation in downtown Phoenix 2 weeks before Christmas!
How fun was that? FUN!!!! But colder than any of us Flagstaff people thought it would be. As a result, by the end of the evening, we were all shivering and probably should have called off the snow cone machine, but the kids and adults who came by, enjoyed their free snow cones. After all, when you come out of a giant snow globe – of course you want a snow cone! Lowell Observatory was there with fun experiments and a telescope, Flag Extreme brought the largest Adirondack chair I’ve ever seen for people to sit in and take pictures. Arizona Snowbowl brought their Tundra Kids to the event and kiddos who had never gotten to snowboard, were strapped into boots and put on a snowboard and then gently tugged over the hills to get used to the feeling of gliding over the snow.
I think my favorite part was the ice carver! The clearest ice you’ve ever seen is placed in the center of a 10 X 10 area, and you’re wondering what it’s going to become as the sculpture takes a knife and starts to draw into the ice very gently. Once he has all his lines drawn, he picks up a chain saw and goes to work making the most incredible display. His first sculpture was a gingerbread man, with a hole where the face was for kids to take pictures. It was amazing. Then he sculpts a nutcracker and a Santa. He finished with a tribute to the real reason we were all there – the snow, and did amazing skier racing to the finish line!
Although it was only a four hour activation, we squeezed a lot into that window and everyone who came by got to experience a taste of what we have to offer up here in the Northland!
