As a college student, I have found that I usually don’t have a lot of money. This can be hard because I really like to shop.  So I discovered that I can go to thrift stores and search for some pretty great items at a price that is unbeatable.

Thrift shopping is definitely an art that takes time to master. It has taken me a while to really understand what a good find is and how to find it.  I am sucker for sweaters and flannels and over the years I have been blinded by my love for them and made some not so great purchases. So here is my guide to avoiding those bad purchases:

 Thoroughly Inspect Your Item

One way to really know if what you’re buying is a good deal is if there are no holes in it. Clothing can be hard because there is always some sort of reason a person wanted to give these items away, whether that is they are out of style or over used. So make sure to look over your item to see if you can either fix the wear-and-tear or that there isn’t any.

 Know Brand Names

A lot of times people will give away Target and Walmart brand items and they will be sold at the same price as a North Face. Knowing brand names will help you know what you are getting. For instance, if I see a target brand flannel that I really like, I keep looking because I want something unique.  But if I can’t find anything else then I will come back to that flannel and make sure it is still in good shape before I buy it. These brands aren’t bad brands but if you’re going for unique and different it’s definitely something to look out for.

Also, most of the fun that comes with thrifting is the “thrill of the kill”. It’s all about the hunt to find that SUPER bargain item.  I have found Columbia jackets, North Face jackets, Anne Klein tops, Nordstrom brand clothing and so much more. So the knowledge of what you’re buying makes you feel so much better about what you’re getting and how much of steal it is.

 It Takes Time

Thrifting is not like department store shopping. It’s not super organized and sometimes it smells weird.  You have to have some time on your hands in order for your trips to be successful. Sometimes you really have to search to find those quality “diamond in the rough” pieces. It’s also very important that you try things on. Don’t think about who wore it before you and just try it on! Most things, even sweaters look completely different on the hanger than it does on a body. So take the time to make smart purchases!

I hope you all thrift and thrift till your heart’s desire! It’s fun to do with friends, so get some people together and make a day of it!
